Clinical signs of PCV-2 infections

The most common form of PCVD is the wasting syndrome. The age group initially affected was pigs around weaning, hence the name (Post Weaning Multisystemic Wasting Syndrome). Later the age group that showed clinical signs increased to between 8 and 14 weeks of age. In general problems are over at 16 weeks of age although there have been reports of problems just before reaching slaughter weight at 22 to 24 weeks of age. Disease at weaning is also still reported.

  • Weaned pigs lose weight and gradually become emaciated - wasting
  • Enlarged peripheral lymph nodes - inguinal lymph nodes are often very prominent
  • Rough haircoat
  • Pale sometimes jaundiced skin
  • Dyspnea may be seen
  • Sudden death
  • May show diarrhoea
  • Rarely incoordination.
