PMWS herd case definition

A case defintion of PMWS has been agreed upon but could change if new knowledge becomes available.

Porcine Circovirus 2 is associated with a group of production limiting disease complexes in pigs. Diseases include Post-weaning Multisystemic Wasting Syndrome (PMWS), Porcine Dermatitis and Nephropathy Syndrome (PDNS) and reproductive disorders. These diseases are known as Porcine Circovirus Diseases (PCVD).

The control of PCVD

PCVD is a multifactorial disease where viruses, bacteria, the environment and management factors all play a role in towards the development of the syndrome. In all cases of PCVD, pigs are positive for Porcine Circovirus 2 (PCV-2) infection. Vaccination against PCV-2 thus contributes towards the effective control of PCVD in swine herds.
